Which foods to eat organically in the UK?

Eating organically is better for your health and for the planet. Period. I think most of us understand it’s not healthy to ingest pesticides and herbicides! But what are the choices when your budget doesn’t allow eating organically? I have so far relied on the Dirty Dozen, an overview of the ‘dirtiest’ fruits and vegetables that the Environmental Working Group creates every year. But that’s a US based list and I was wondering what the situation here is. So my question was: which foods to eat organically in the UK? And how to prioritise?

I did some research and found out that the Pesticides Action Network UK also creates a Dirty Dozen list of the most sprayed fruits and veg. Yay! They made it into a handy list you can print out and have in your wallet when you shop. You can download it here.

When I saw the list I was shocked! There were actually three items on it that I would buy and eat on a regular basis: satsumas, spinach and raisins…

Here’s the UK Dirty Dozen 2021 list in order of samples that had the highest percentage of multiple residues:

  • Grapefruit
  • Soft citrus (your mandarins, satsuma’s etc)
  • Strawberries
  • Oranges
  • Dried grapes (sultanas, raisins)
  • Herbs
  • Pre-packed salads
  • Grapes,
  • Lemons
  • Pears
  • Peaches
  • Spinach

Cocktail effect

But aren’t pesticides tested for safety, you ask? Well… There is a growing body of evidence that pesticides can become more harmful when combined. That’s called the ‘cocktail effect’. There are of course national regulations and they are there to protect us. The problem is that these look at individual chemicals, so one pesticide at a time. This not only ignores the current situation where more than one pesticide is used on let’s say an apple. It also ignores the effect of what happens when we eat different foods all day with different pesticides on them…


Sadly this is not the only issue with our food – the many processed foods we eat, the large amounts of sugary foods, the many additives and chemicals added on top… All these can confuse and weaken your immune system.
