Shht, don’t tell anyone! People think making your own chocolate is a very complicated process but it’s actually dead easy! When you make your own dark chocolate you’ll 1. get many compliments when you bring it to a party 2. have a healthy and very delicious treat 3. add many minerals and antioxidants to your diet. And it’s much more affordable than your fancy shop-bought raw chocolate bar!
Your standard milk chocolate’s ingredients list is topped by milk and sugar and can also contain palm fat, emulsifiers and flavourings. Your home made dark chocolate only contains 3 ingredients, all of high quality. This is the kind of chocolate that is intense and you will savour and enjoy every little bit.
Chocolate as a health food
Chocolate doesn’t have to be a guilty pleasure. It can actually be a healthy one!
- It contains a load of minerals
- It’s a mood booster
- It contains polyphenols – those feed your beneficial gut bacteria!
- Those polyphenols are also antioxidants
- It contains magnesium – are most of us are deficient in magnesium
Some practical tips
I buy raw cacao powder and raw cacao butter in kilo bags here or here. You don’t need a chocolate mold (just spreading it out on a baking tray lined with parchment paper or in a flexible ice cube tray will work) but I really love the few molds I have. You’ll find many fun ones here.
I melt the cacao butter in a pyrex bowl over a pot with almost boiling water. I make sure the bowl doesn’t touch the water because that can heat it up too much.
You can leave the chocolate plain or add nuts, seeds or other nice things like cinnamon, mint oil, goji berries and more.
